About Us

Hamilton Civic Museums brings the city's rich history to life across iconic heritage sites, through year-round events, interactive tours, hands-on workshops, imaginative programs and exhibitions. Connecting people with Hamilton's diverse history, cultures, and ongoing contributions of Indigenous Peoples, we share stories of the people, places, and events that shaped Hamilton's past and continue to inspire its future.

Our Approach

Indigenous Relations

The City of Hamilton is situated upon the traditional territories of the Erie, Neutral, Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee and Mississaugas. This land is covered by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, which was an agreement between the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabek to share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. We further acknowledge that this land is covered by the Between the Lakes Purchase, 1792, between the Crown and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. Today, the City of Hamilton is home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island (North America) and we recognize that we must do more to learn about the rich history of this land so that we can better understand our roles as residents, neighbours, partners and caretakers.

Through the Urban Indigenous Strategy, the City of Hamilton together with Indigenous and non-Indigenous residents is embarking on a journey to reconciliation that will honour the history, knowledge, rights, languages and cultures of the First Peoples of Canada.

Hamilton Civic Museums Strategy

The Hamilton Civic Museum Strategy is a transformative plan that guides our work from 2022 to 2030. The strategy is a made-in-Hamilton approach to heritage presentation and community engagement that is informed by best practices from leading organizations and thought leaders in the museum sector.

Accessibility

We are committed to making our museums and historic sites welcoming and accessible to all visitors. Accessibility features vary by location, from fully accessible spaces to sites with partial accessibility or limited physical access. Before your visit, review the location page(s) to confirm accessibility features, available services, and site-specific considerations.

As part of an accessibility pilot, Magnolia Hall is participating in the GoodMaps program, which provides accessible wayfinding to help visitors navigate the location. Visitors are encouraged to download the GoodMaps app (Apple/Android) before their visit.

Inclusivity

All Hamilton Civic Museums are Rainbow Registered. Rainbow Registered is a nationally recognized accreditation program developed by the Canadian Queer Chamber of Commerce (CQCC) and Tourism HR Canada, recognizing 2SLGBTQI+ organizations that create inclusive spaces.
