Event Details

The Tourism and Culture Division, City of Hamilton, presents the annual Hamilton & Scourge Memorial Sunset Ceremony, Thursday August 8, 2024 at the Confederation Park Naval Memorial Garden.

The service runs from 7:00pm – 7:45pm.

The event marks the loss of 53 sailors who went down with two United States schooners, Hamilton & Scourge, during the War of 1812. Members of the American Legion in Canada form the Flag Party as part of the ceremony, which includes the story of the sinking by local historian Commander Robert Williamson RCN(r). Naval Cadets place flags and flowers at each stone. The singing of the national anthems will be performed by tenor Jason Hales, and music provided by a bugler and piper.

The preservation and presentation of the Hamilton & Scourge National Historic Site would not be possible without the leadership and funding provided by City Council.
