Many Brightsiders made homemade wine, while others broke the law selling whiskey or ‘moonshine.’ Of the latter practice, stories reveal that many informal establishments - kitchens, basements, dens, and parlours – existed where a person, could duck in for a quick drink, like some drinkers did during their lunch break or after work.

Your father used to make the wine, eh? 

Speaker 2:

Speaker 1:    

Your dad, he used to make it in the basement. And we used to test it out down there. Remember? 

Speaker 2:    

We used to test the wine in the basement. 

Yeah. And then you guys used to come in and drink it. 

Speaker 1:    

Yeah. You and me. Yeah. 

And get stupid.
