Since ancient times, engineers have designed structures to withstand the forces of nature. The original Hamilton Waterworks has supported the weight of two 70-ton steam engines for 160 years! Children will investigate structural engineering and the forces that act upon structures like buildings and bridges. With the help of museum interpreters, participants will be guided through hands on activities themed around the building strong structures.
Hamilton Museum of Steam & Technology is excited to present the “STEAM Saturdays” kids workshop series for children. This workshop is a staff-led and supervised event. Parents/Caregivers are welcome to stay but are not required to do so. Consent forms and emergency contact information will be required at drop-off.
Tickets are $25 per child and $9 per adult supervisor (adults may stay or drop off). Pre-registration is required. This workshop is designed for children ages 7-12 years.

Join us for an inspiring experience as you discover the charm of both the kitchen and the Historic Kitchen Garden at Dundurn Castle. Garden Demonstrators will share their tips and tricks for growing the finest heirloom tomatoes. Get hands-on by assisting with tending to the plants before harvesting some luscious fruit yourself. Then participate in the preparation of a unique historic tomato recipe in the historic kitchen in the basement of Dundurn Castle. Your morning concludes with an al fresco tasting of your treats.
Pre-registration is required. Tickets are $65 per person. This workshop is designed for participants aged 14 years and over.

Your visit includes preparing a historic recipe in the kitchen, an interactive tour of the incredible 1.5-acre Historic Kitchen Garden, and a scavenger hunt in Dundurn Park with an activity book. Conclude your visit with an outdoor tasting of delicious treats. Perfect for children 7 and up.

Join us for the “STEAM Saturdays” workshop at the museum! This month’s workshop will investigate the Science of Time and include several hands-on activities and experiments. We’ll learn about different methods of tracking time, how clocks work, and make our own sundials and water clocks to take home. Workshop will include a condensed tour of the museum.

September marks the height of the growing season and that means there is an abundance of fresh produce in the Historic Kitchen Garden at Dundurn Castle. We will turn up the heat in our historic kitchen where you will try your hand at autumn inspired 19th century recipes. The cooks guide your progress transforming simple ingredients into delectable dishes on our cast iron range that are shared by all. (Recipes can be adapted to be vegan or vegetarian upon request).

Kids will put their knowledge and skills to the test as they are challenged to protect an egg from the forces of gravity. Participants will also work as a team to set up a marble run that mimics a water tower delivering water to houses and industry around the city.

Mohawk Chef Tawnya Brant returns to our historic kitchen for another incredible hands-on experience. In this workshop Tawnya takes us on a journey preparing traditional and inspired Indigenous soups! The diverse medley of recipes includes a traditional white corn soup (gluten free/contains pork), Pickerel and Wild Rice Chowder (contains dairy/gluten) and her own “Haudenosaunee Minestrone” (vegan/gluten free). Roll up your sleeves in our beautiful 19th century historic kitchen as we guide you through the preparation. The workshop concludes with a tasting of your soups and a deeper appreciation of Indigenous cuisine.
