1946 Strike

What We Want

Strikers fought for several gains, including recognition of USW Local 1005 as the official union for all Stelco workers. The outcome of the strike changed Canadian labour history forever; governments and employers now began to officially recognize industrial unions.  

As Canada’s largest manufacturer of steel Stelco stood as Hamilton’s largest employer. With Stelco’s acceptance of industrial unionism, striking workers won an important precedent that affected many other industries in Canada. (Courtesy of HAC, HPL)
